KUCHING: The Election Commission (EC) will carry out a review of the delineation of federal and state electoral constituencies in Sarawak following the coming into force of the State Legislative Assembly (Composition of Membership) Ordinance 2025.
The EC said the review would be carried out under Clause (2) of Article 113 of the Federal Constitution, taking into consideration the ordinance which came into force on Aug 8, 2025.
“The EC will display the Proposed Recommendations for the Review of the Delineation of Federal and State Electoral Constituencies in the Sarawak for one month, from Sept 1 to 30, at the locations specified in the Delineation Notice published in local newspapers today, for the purpose of inspection and objections,” it said in a statement issued on Tuesday (Sept 1) via its Facebook page.
Under the proposed recommendations, there will be no change to the number of federal electoral constituencies in Sarawak, although some federal constituencies will be affected by the proposed recommendations.
The total number of state electoral constituencies in Sarawak will increase by 17, bringing the total to 99.
The EC also proposed amendments to the name of one federal electoral constituency and 10 state electoral constituencies in Sarawak.
Details of the proposed recommendations are set out in the notice published in the Gazette, as well as in Utusan Borneo and The Borneo Post.
“A copy of the proposed recommendations together with the Draft Plan of Federal and State Electoral Constituencies in Sarawak will also be displayed for public inspection during office hours on working days at locations specified in the notice.
“The documents are also available through the EC’s portal at myst.spr.gov.my.”
Representations regarding the proposed recommendations may be submitted to the EC within one month from the date of publication of the notice.
Meanwhile, a local inquiry will be held for representations objecting to the proposed recommendations from the state government or any local authority whose whole or part of its area is included in the affected electoral constituencies.
It will also cover representations from a group of at least 100 persons whose names are listed in the current electoral roll for the constituencies concerned.
“Any representation objecting to the proposed recommendations shall be submitted in writing to the Election Commission and sent online through https://myst.spr.gov.my/ or addressed to the Sarawak State Election Officer.”
