SIBU: The Sarawak Government will continue to place great emphasis on the development of education and human capital as an important foundation in producing a knowledgeable, skilled and competitive generation to lead the state’s development in the future.

Pointing out this, Bawang Assan assemblyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, stressed that education remained the main key to a brighter future.

Hence, students must strive to achieve a balance between academic excellence, active involvement in sports, and the formation of a commendable personality.

“The Sarawak Government today places great emphasis on the development of education and human capital. With the availability of free higher education opportunities, especially in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), students need to make higher education their main goal,” he said in his speech when officiating at the closing of SMK Bawang Assan Sports Meet 2026 here on Thursday.

Wong was represented by Cr Sean Wong Jiun Jieh who read his speech.

Wong also stressed that school sports meet was not just a competition to win but also served as an important platform in shaping students from the physical, mental, emotional and social aspects.

He said that through involvement in sports, students could foster the values of discipline, team spirit, resilience, leadership and self-confidence which were the foundation for the formation of quality human capital.

He also reminded students to always practise high moral values, good behaviour and strong spiritual beliefs because true success was not only measured through academic achievement alone.

At the same time, Wong also expressed his appreciation to SMK Bawang Assan’s principal, Kong Chiong Hui, for his excellent leadership which had successfully led the school to achieve various successes in the academic, co-curricular, discipline and student character development fields.

“The school’s high dedication and commitment in providing a conducive educational environment is very important in producing a quality and competitive young generation,” he said.

He also urged students to continue to aspire high and work hard in their studies because Sarawak needed more skilled and professional personnel in various strategic fields.

Commenting on the spirit of sportsmanship, Wong said winning or losing was not the main measure. Rather, the experience, effort and values gained throughout the competition were more meaningful in shaping an individual’s character.

At the ceremony, Sean, on behalf of Wong, also presented a donation of RM5,000 to the school for organising the sports meet.

Also present was the president of SMK Bawang Assan Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Lau Chenggang.
