MIRI: A 27-year-old man was jailed for eight months after pleading guilty to breaking into a shop and stealing RM1,300 in cash here earlier this month.
The Magistrates’ Court sentenced the man on Friday after he admitted to an offence under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which covers housebreaking and theft.
The burglary took place at 4.52 am on June 5 at a business premises in Airport Commercial Centre on Jalan Airport. The shop owner was alerted by an employee that someone had broken into the premises.
A subsequent inspection revealed that a cashier box containing RM1,300 in cash had been stolen.
Police arrested the man on June 24 during investigations into a series of break-ins and thefts reported across Miri.
During questioning, he led investigators to a roadside drain along Jalan Perdana in Tudan Phase 6, where he had discarded the stolen cashier box.
Miri District Police said they would continue stepping up security patrols to deter property crime and urged the public to remain vigilant by reporting any suspicious individuals or activities to the authorities.
