SIMANGGANG: The body of 71-year-old Banggau Ngilas was recovered early this morning (Sept 15) after the boat he and his son-in-law were travelling in capsized near the Bayai Water Treatment Plant in Sri Aman yesterday.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak said villagers discovered the victim’s body at 3.48 am, about 200 metres from the site of the incident.

“The victim’s body was found intact but lifeless and has since been taken to Sri Aman Hospital for further action,” the department said.

Earlier, it was reported that the victim went missing after the incident on Sunday morning, while his 36-year-old son-in-law, Roys Misen, managed to swim to safety.

The two were returning from an oil palm plantation and transporting palm oil when their boat hit a driftwood and sank.

Banggau was swept away by the current, which later prompted a search and rescue (SAR) operation involving firefighters from the Sri Aman station, police and the Civil Defence Force (APM) Sri Aman.

The search operation was officially concluded at 6 am today after the victim’s body was found.
