MIRI: An 85-year-old woman was injured after a gas leak triggered an explosion at a residential house in Taman Jelita Fasa 2 here on Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Miri Sentral station were dispatched immediately after receiving an emergency call.

Operations commander PBK I Mohammad Fairus Apit said preliminary investigations found that the explosion was caused by a gas leak from a cooking stove.

“The explosion caused damage to the kitchen ceiling of the house,” he said in an operational report.

The injured victim, identified as Baun Jok, was taken to hospital by ambulance before firefighters arrived.

A team of firemen carried out monitoring and safety assessment works to ensure there were no further risks at the house.

The operation was brought under control at 12.49 pm and concluded three minutes later.

The incident serves as another reminder of the dangers posed by leaking cooking gas, particularly in residential areas, and the importance of regular inspections of gas cylinders, regulators, and rubber hoses to prevent accidents.
