MUKAH: Firefighters contained a blaze at a mobile phone service centre here within minutes today (April 12), preventing it from spreading to neighbouring shop units.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s operations centre said it received an emergency call at 7:49 am to report on smoke coming from the AK Mobile Service Centre in Block 68.
A team from the Mukah station arrived at the scene five minutes later.
On arrival, firefighters found smoke issuing from inside the locked premises. Following an initial assessment, the operations commander ordered the team to force entry using hand tools.
Wearing full protective equipment, personnel entered the shop and extinguished the fire using a portable extinguisher.
The blaze, which involved electronic equipment, was quickly brought under control.
Officials said the fire damaged about 10 per cent of the premises. No casualties were reported.
The operations were declared under control at 8:01 am and concluded at 8:17 am, with five firefighters and one engine deployed.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
The department said the swift response helped avert further damage in the commercial area, where closely spaced units can increase the risk of fire spread.
