BINTULU: A 12-year-old boy was rushed through an emergency procedure after a metal rod became lodged in his neck, forcing firefighters to step in so doctors could carry out urgent medical scans.

The incident occurred in the early hours of today at Hospital Nyabau, here, where medical personnel sought assistance from Bomba to remove part of the metal obstruction from the child’s neck.

A rescue team from the Bintulu fire station was deployed at 5.47am and arrived at the hospital about 20 minutes later after travelling 21 kilometres.

Despite the severity of the injury, the boy was reported to be conscious when firefighters arrived.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre, personnel carried out a delicate cutting operation using bolt cutters to shorten the metal rod, allowing hospital staff to proceed with a CT scan.

The operation, conducted carefully to avoid worsening the child’s injuries, ended at 6.26am.

Eight firefighters took part in the mission, assisted by a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle.

No further information on the child’s condition has been released.
