LUNDU: Four infrastructure projects worth nearly RM1.48 million are being implemented under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) to improve agricultural access, reduce flood risks, and spur economic growth in Opar.

Opar assemblyman, Billy Sujang, said the projects reflected the Sarawak Government’s continuous commitment to providing infrastructure that meets the needs of rural communities while supporting their socio-economic development.

“The projects, which are expected to be completed within six months, would improve access to agricultural areas, facilitate the transportation of farm produce, and create more economic opportunities for local residents,” he said in a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

Billy said this after witnessing the site handover for the projects at Kampung Rumih, Kampung Selampit and Kampung Sebandi Hilir on Wednesday (July 15).

The largest project involves Phase Two of the Opar/Rumih agricultural road upgrading, valued at RM1,129,882.88.

The project comprises the construction of a 1.9-km gravel road, a 300-m concrete road, the installation of 13 culverts of various sizes, and two reinforced concrete crossover structures.

Three drainage upgrading projects are also being carried out at Kampung Selampit 1, Sekolah Kebangsaan Selampit and Kampung Sebandi Hilir, with a combined allocation of more than RM348,000.

Billy said agricultural roads and drainage systems were essential infrastructure that enhanced agricultural productivity, strengthened connectivity, and improved the well-being of rural communities.

He also reminded contractors to ensure all projects were carried out according to specifications, completed on schedule, and maintained high construction standards so that the intended benefits could be delivered to the people as planned.
