BINTULU: Drivers of commercial, public service and tourism vehicles can expect frequent roadside drug screening as authorities ramps up enforcement operations aimed at keeping drug-impaired motorists off the roads and enhancing public safety.

Launched simultaneously nationwide on Jul 1, the integrated ‘Ops Dadah’ is being carried out across Sarawak by the Road Transport Department (RTD) together with National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) and Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MoTAC).

The integrated operation being carried out by RTD and AADK at the Bintulu Bus Terminal.

Focusing on drivers of goods vehicles, public service vehicles and tourism vehicles, the operation includes roadside inspections and drug screening to ensure only those free from drug abuse are allowed to operate such vehicles.

‘Ops Dadah’ will continue to be carried out regularly as part of ongoing efforts to detect drug-related offences, strengthen compliance within the commercial transport sector and safeguard the safety of all road users.

Drivers who test positive during the screening will face action by AADK under the relevant laws, while RTD will take firm enforcement measures, including detaining vocational licences (PSV/GDL) for investigation and suspending driving licences in accordance with existing legal provisions.

Sarawak RTD said road safety cannot be compromised, adding that the operation reflects the government’s continued commitment to ensuring only responsible, disciplined and drug-free drivers are entrusted with operating commercial vehicles.

In the latest operation conducted at Bintulu Bus Terminal yesterday (Jul 6), seven RTD officers and six AADK personnel inspected 15 buses.

A total of 10 drivers underwent drug screening, with all testing negative. No offences under RTD’s jurisdiction were detected during the operation.
