GEDONG: The road linking Gedong to Ulu Simunjan via Semalatong is expected to be completed within the next one to two years.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the project forms part of the state government’s comprehensive development plan for both Gedong and Simunjan.

“In the past, travelling to Ulu Simunjan took much longer because the existing road followed a winding route. Today, we are constructing a new road via Semalatong to Gedong, which we hope will be completed within the next one to two years.

“Once completed, it will bring Gedong and Simunjan, including Ulu Simunjan, much closer together,” he said in an UKAS report during the Ngiling Bidai Gawai Dayak celebration 2026 held at Kampung Keniong Jaya on Monday (Jun 29).

Abang Johari, who is the Gedong assemblyman, said Jalan Munggu Kopi is also being upgraded as part of a dual-carriageway project linking Samarahan, Serian and Gedong.

The road connects Serian to Gedong before extending to Samarahan.

He said that once the entire road network is completed, the route from Munggu Kopi to Gedong will be extended to Rembus in Samarahan, Asajaya and Sadong Jaya before connecting to Kuching via the new Sejingkat Bridge.

He said the expanded road network will then continue to Sebuyau, the Batang Lupar Bridge, Lingga in Sri Aman and Betong, significantly reducing travel time and improving road connectivity between southern and central Sarawak.
