BAU: Local charity organisation Hope Place Kuching has stepped in to help a family in Kampung Buso here, which is facing hardship after a young mother of three was diagnosed with kidney failure.
Meriam Suwin, 36, has been battling the illness since 2021, leaving her family struggling emotionally and financially to cope with her condition.
“I will be strong for my family,” she said, expressing determination despite her worsening health.
Meriam first fell ill while living in Miri during the COVID-19 period, experiencing severe weight loss but avoiding medical check-ups due to fear of hospitals.
Seeking alternative treatment, the family relocated to Kuching, hoping traditional remedies could help, but her condition deteriorated further before a proper diagnosis was eventually made.
Doctors at Sarawak General Hospital later confirmed kidney failure, requiring immediate and continuous treatment to manage her condition and prevent further complications.
Now, Meriam undergoes haemodialysis three times a week at Bau Hospital, a demanding routine that leaves her physically weak and increasingly underweight.
Her husband, Seliman, 36, works at a chicken farm here, earning a meagre income that barely covers rent, daily needs, and medical-related expenses.
“We try our best every day, but sometimes it is just not enough,” said Seliman, reflecting on the family’s ongoing financial struggles and responsibilities.
The couple’s children are aged between 11 and 18, with their eldest son working part-time while waiting for opportunities to further his studies.
Their 14-year-old daughter has taken on additional responsibilities, preparing meals for the family before attending her afternoon school sessions each day.
“I’m just a kampung girl. I stopped school early, but I want a better life for my children,” Meriam shared, reflecting on her hopes.
Despite receiving RM500 monthly assistance from the Social Welfare Department, the family continues to face financial pressure, especially with ongoing dialysis treatment and educational expenses.
The organisation is providing basic food aid while urging the public to contribute and support families facing similar medical and financial hardships.
