MIRI: A housewife was left RM130,000 poorer after falling victim to a non-existent online job offer that was advertised on social media.
The incident happened early last month when the woman, in her 50s, came across a part-time job advertisement on TikTok. Intrigued by the offer, the victim contacted a supposed agent to learn more about the job.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the victim was added to a Telegram group and was informed that she would receive commissions for completing tasks.
“The woman was assigned to promote products from a clothing brand. Following that, she transferred a sum of RM130,000 in stages into a bank account provided by the suspect.
“However, the victim realised that she had been scammed when she had to make another payment if she wanted to withdraw the profit commissions,” he said.
Comm Mancha added that the victim reported the incident to the police and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.
In light of this, he urged the public not to be easily fooled by part-time job offers advertised on social media and to verify the legitimacy of such offers before engaging in them.
