KOTA SAMARAHAN: The spread of misinformation and slander on social media has become a greater threat to society than actual insects, with “human flies” capable of poisoning minds and creating division.

Muara Tuang assemblyman, Datuk Idris Buang, said while common flies are associated with disease transmission, the misuse of digital platforms can have far-reaching consequences on individuals and communities.

“Flies can spread diseases, but what is more dangerous today are the ‘human flies’ on social media who spread falsehoods, slander and unfounded accusations without verifying the facts,” he said when officiating the 2026 Fly Control Campaign at the Ferry Terminal Hawker Stalls here today.

Idris noted that many social media users freely comment on issues beyond their expertise, often presenting opinions as facts and contributing to public confusion.

“We must use the knowledge and intellect that God has given us to distinguish between what is true and what is false.

“Do not accept everything you read or hear without checking the facts,” he urged, adding that society must cultivate a culture of cross-checking information from credible sources.

He also reminded Muslims to avoid engaging in slander, backbiting and character assassination on social media, warning that such actions could negate good deeds and damage social harmony.

“Social media should be used to share beneficial knowledge and positive messages, not to spread hatred, division or baseless allegations,” he said.

Idris stressed that maintaining respect, responsibility and integrity in online communication remains essential in preserving unity and preventing the spread of harmful misinformation.

The remarks were delivered in conjunction with the 2026 Fly Control Campaign organised by the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS), which aims to raise awareness on cleanliness, public health and community responsibility.
