KUCHING: Some 300 students will take centre stage at the 3rd Sarawak Inter-School Futsal Championship 2026, where the focus goes beyond competition to building character and discipline.

The two-day Under-17 tournament is held across two venues, beginning with group stage matches at Arena Sukan Simpang Tiga on April 11, before moving to Stadium Tertutup Samarahan for the knockout rounds through to the final on April 12.

Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mordi Bimol said the championship also aligns with Sarawak’s broader aspiration to strengthen its position in regional sports development ahead of the 2027 Malaysia SEA Games.

“The organisation of this championship also supports the aspiration of positioning Sarawak as a regional sports development hub ahead of the 2027 Malaysia SEA Games.

“While also developing young athletes who are not only outstanding in performance, but also disciplined, of high integrity, and with a strong sporting spirit,” he said in his address at the opening of the 3rd Sarawak Inter-School Futsal Championship 2026 today (Apr 11) at Arena Sukan, Simpang Tiga.

He added that such tournaments are expected to play a continuous role in strengthening futsal development at the national level.

“Such tournaments are expected to continue serving as a catalyst for the development of futsal in the country, with more young talents being identified and brought to higher levels in a systematic and continuous manner,” he said.

Sarawak’s strong showing as runners-up in the futsal event at the 2024 Malaysia (SUKMA) Games further highlights the state’s growing potential, with continued emphasis now placed on expanding the talent pool and building squad depth.
