SIBU: Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, has called for robust people-to-people engagement as a vital pathway to reducing global friction, highlighting the growing importance of international volunteerism during times of intense geopolitical uncertainty.
Speaking at the Asia Pacific Lions Leaders Summit (APLLS) 2026 Closing Ceremony Luncheon here today, Tiong noted that while governments engaged through formal diplomacy, humanitarian groups connected communities directly through service, culture and disaster relief.
“I believe peace begins with people,” said Tiong, who is also the Dudong assemblyman and Bintulu Member of Parliament.
“When communities build genuine friendships and mutual respect, these efforts gradually grow into stronger cooperation at higher levels, helping to ease tensions and promote lasting peace.”
Addressing over 700 Asia-Pacific delegates gathered under the theme ‘Uniting Leaders, Inspiring Service’, the minister praised Lions Clubs International for its legacy in global healthcare, education and community development.
Tiong underscored the economic windfall of hosting large international conferences, noting they instantly stimulated local tourism, hospitality and retail sectors.
He warmly invited the international delegates to extend their stay in Sarawak to sample authentic local delicacies like kampua and kompia.
Before declaring the three-day summit officially closed, Tiong announced a RM50,000 contribution to support the Lions movement’s future initiatives and commended organising chairperson, Datuk Betty Wong Yieng, for executing the high-profile event.
Also present were Lions International President, Mark S. Lyon, and Lions International District 308-A2 Governor, Datuk Jimmy Yie Yien Hwa.
