MIRI: The Jom Homestay Bario Highland Festival has been recognised as a significant platform for promoting community-based tourism, showcasing local cultural heritage, and driving rural economic growth.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, said such initiatives not only highlight Bario as an authentic tourism destination but also offer visitors a direct and meaningful cultural experience.
“Homestay programmes are not just about tourism; they are a form of cultural exchange that enrich both visitors and the local community,” he said when officiating the festival on Thursday.
Gerawat emphasised the state government’s continued commitment to supporting rural tourism development through various initiatives such as the Homestay Programme, Community-Based Tourism, and Eco-Tourism projects.
He added that the government will continue to enhance basic infrastructure, improve road connectivity, strengthen digital communication, and provide skills training to homestay operators to ensure visitors receive the best possible experience.
Gerawat also commended the Bario community for their self-initiative and strong gotong-royong spirit in preserving their culture, traditions and environment despite being far from urban centres.
“I am confident that through close cooperation between the government, the community and the private sector, Bario will continue to thrive as a leading tourism destination rooted in community values, sustainability and authenticity,” he said.
The Jom Homestay Bario Highland Festival is expected to become an annual event, attracting more tourists while creating economic spillovers for the local community.
