KUCHING: The ramp at Kenyalang Park Market here, which failed to meet the required quality standards, will soon undergo repairs to ensure public safety.
This follows a routine inspection by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), which flagged the ramp’s substandard condition as a matter of urgency.
The inspection, led by MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, was accompanied by Councillors Judy Kho, Chai Ju Loon, Eric Tay, Roy Mason, and the officer responsible for Kenyalang Park. It forms part of the council’s ongoing efforts to improve public safety and upgrade facilities.
During the inspection, Wee assessed the ramp’s condition and confirmed it did not meet MBKS’ quality requirements.
“The quality of the ramp is unsatisfactory. MBKS places the highest priority on safe, accessible public infrastructure, and contractors must adhere strictly to the required specifications and standards,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
He went on to announce that the council had terminated the contract of the company responsible for the ramp and is now in the process of appointing a new contractor.
“Rectification work will commence as soon as the new contractor is in place,” he assured. “We apologise for any inconvenience caused to residents and market-goers. The issue will be addressed promptly.”
In addition to the ramp inspection, the team also checked fire extinguishers at various market stalls to ensure they were well-maintained and easily accessible.
“Fire safety is vital in public spaces. We want our hawkers to feel confident in using fire extinguishers and be familiar with basic emergency procedures,” he explained.
To further enhance safety awareness, Wee announced that MBKS will organise fire safety training sessions for hawkers, in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).
The sessions will cover topics such as the proper use of fire extinguishers, safe handling of gas cylinders and electrical equipment, and effective response during fire emergencies.
