KUCHING: Kuching is leveraging international platforms to strengthen its position as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, with Sarawak chefs set to compete at the Master Chef of Foodex 2026 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from Apr 15 to 18.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the participation reflects ongoing efforts to elevate the city’s culinary profile through strategic global exposure.
He said since receiving the UNESCO designation, MBKS has been working closely with the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) and industry players to promote Kuching’s culinary identity internationally.
“Kuching’s recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy is not merely a title, but a responsibility that we uphold with pride and strong commitment.
“Through strong collaboration with chefs, industry stakeholders, and partners, we have continuously implemented programmes that promote our rich culinary heritage, cultural diversity, and distinctive local ingredients,” he said in a statement.
Among those representing Kuching and Sarawak are Chef Robbie Richard Balcarek and Chef Nicky Nelson from Little Fairy Cafe, Chef Iana Akam and Chef Janncy Nyohim from Fairy Tavern, Chef Wilson Voon from Fish Buddy Aquarium and Cafe, Chef Ronald Bong from Regal Hainanese Chicken Rice, and Chef Benny Huang from Xian Corner.
Wee said the chefs reflect the strength and creativity of Sarawak’s culinary community, with their ability to blend tradition and innovation positioning them as ambassadors on the international stage.
“Their dedication and skills will allow them to represent Kuching and Sarawak with distinction while strengthening our presence globally,” he added.
He also said Sarawak’s representation extends to the judging panel, with Chef Julian from Little Hainan Restaurant and Chef Jordan from Jordan’s Signature invited as judges.
“Their appointment reflects the growing recognition of Sarawak’s culinary expertise at the international level,” he said.
Wee noted that earlier this year, four Sarawak chefs had participated in the International Cities of Gastronomy Fest in Macau, while another six are scheduled to take part in the Kuching–Madinah Chef Exchange Programme in July.
He said MBKS will continue to work with MTCP and relevant stakeholders to further advance Kuching’s gastronomy agenda and expand its global reach.
