SAMARAHAN: The Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Package 1 is on track for completion by end-2026, aiming to modernise and improve public transport in the area.

Deputy Minister for Rural and Regional Development and Kota Samarahan MP Datuk Rubiah Wang said the development was announced during the KUTS Project Coordination Meeting held at the Samarahan Public Works Department (JKR) meeting room on Monday (April 20).

Sheadded that the meeting focused on reviewing project progress and coordinating implementation among technical and executing agencies.

“Various issues and challenges throughout the implementation of the project were discussed in detail including traffic management, compliance with safety policies as well as the operational planning of the Autonomous Rail Transit (ART) system which will operate at 10-minute intervals,” she said when chairing the meeting.

She noted that flooding issues, which had previously affected Kampung Plaie and Sungai Batu, were also given due attention with several solutions identified, including upgrading works and the expansion of the drainage system to ensure a more controlled and systematic water flow.

At the same time, long-term planning is also being developed to address the increasing number of vehicles in the surrounding area, particularly at the Entingan roundabout.

“The proposed construction of a new 1.5km road linking Jalan Kampung Meranek to Jalan Residen is a proactive measure to reduce traffic congestion and improve local connectivity.”

Upon completion, the KUTS system is expected to operate with 38 ART units and 55 supporting buses, thereby further enhancing mobility for the people of Samarahan.

Rubiah stressed that the government remains committed to ensuring smooth implementation while prioritising public safety and comfort.
