LINGGA: A massive fire that swept through about three acres of a landfill here has entered its second day yesterday (July 27), with firefighters continuing to battle stubborn hotspots amid thick smoke and a limited water supply.
The blaze was brought under control at around 7.40 am but has yet to be extinguished, as smoke continues to billow from sections of the dumping site.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Sri Aman station were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 8.02 pm on Sunday (July 26).
Firefighters initially tackled the blaze using water from an open source to prevent the flames from spreading further.
By yesterday (Jul 27) morning, crews had successfully extinguished about two acres of the affected area, while firefighting efforts continued on the remaining one acre.
The department said the fire remains under control but has not been extinguished due to thick smoke, the vast area involved and difficulty in securing sufficient water at the scene.
The operation has also been hampered by ongoing construction along the main road to Lingga and poor network coverage.
At the time of writing, the extinguishing operation is still ongoing to eliminate the risk of any flare-ups.
