SIBU: A long-standing safety concern for residents in Bawang Assan has been addressed with the installation of 19 new street lights along the main access road serving SK Bawang Assan and SMK Bawang Assan, providing a safer and more secure route for hundreds of daily road users.
The project, implemented under the Bawang Assan Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) special allocation, was officially confirmed completed following a site inspection led by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch Chairman Kevin Lau on Tuesday (July 21).
Lau described the project as a meaningful improvement to the area’s public infrastructure, noting that enhanced street lighting will substantially increase visibility and road safety, particularly during the early morning and evening hours when parents and students travel to and from the two schools.
“Road safety is a basic necessity for every community. With these street lights now operational, motorists, parents and students can travel with greater confidence, especially during low-light conditions,” he said.
He revealed that preparations for the project began towards the end of last year.
Beyond improving road safety, he said the initiative reflects the importance of strategic infrastructure investments in supporting the well-being of rural communities.
“Our priority is to continue delivering practical infrastructure that directly benefits the people. We will remain proactive in pursuing projects that strengthen public amenities, improve connectivity and enhance the quality of life for residents across the Bawang Assan constituency,” he said.
