KUCHING: Sarawakian shuttler Wong Ling Ching forced world No.21 Nguyen Thuy Linh into a gruelling deuce standstill before narrowly bowing out in the opening round of the Malaysia Masters 2026 in Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur tonight.

Ling Ching, currently ranked world No.33, the highest ranking of her career so far, pushed the Vietnamese ace to the brink before eventually falling 21-12, 13-21, 23-25 in a tense three-game battle.

The Malaysian started brightly, dictating the pace early with sharp attacking play and confident court control to comfortably take the opening set 21-12.

However, Nguyen responded strongly in the second game, gradually regaining momentum through faster rallies and sustained pressure to level the match after winning 21-13.

With the contest pushed into a decider, both players raised the intensity even further.

The third set quickly turned into a nerve-wracking affair as Ling Ching and Nguyễn traded points relentlessly in a prolonged back-and-forth battle that eventually stretched deep into deuce territory.

Neither player showed signs of backing down.

But with the pressure mounting inside the arena, the Vietnamese shuttler eventually edged past the Sarawakian 25-23 in one of the most demanding matches of the day.

Elsewhere, K. Letshanaa progressed after defeating Denmark’s world No.39 Amalie Schulz 21-13, 19-21, 21-15 in another demanding three-game encounter.

Former national ace Goh Jin Wei joined her in the Round of 16 after overcoming Thailand’s world No.18 Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-6, 16-21, 21-10.

Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai meanwhile enjoyed a comfortable outing after dispatching the United States pairing of Chen Zhi Yi-Francesca Corbett 21-8, 21-16 in just 26 minutes.

However, several Malaysians suffered opening-round exits.

Justin Hoh fell 21-14, 21-16 to Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, while Leong Jun Hao pushed China’s Hu Zhe An to the limit before narrowly losing 21-19, 23-21.

Mixed doubles pairs Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin and Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien also bowed out alongside Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing.

Women’s doubles debutants Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan-Low Zi Yu and Cheng Su Hui-Tan Zhing Hui likewise exited after defeats against higher-ranked opponents from China and Japan respectively.
