KUCHING: Malaysian badminton is mourning the loss of former national great Teh Kew San, who passed away at the age of 91.

Born in Penang, Teh was a former captain of Malaysia’s victorious 1967 Thomas Cup squad and was widely regarded as one of the country’s finest and most versatile badminton players.

The Penangite’s decorated career saw him win the 1959 All England men’s doubles title, capture the Asian Championships men’s singles gold medal in 1962, and help Malaysia secure men’s team gold medals in 1962 and 1965.

He also clinched mixed doubles gold at the 1962 Asian Games before playing a pivotal role in Malaysia’s historic Thomas Cup triumph in 1967.

Teh is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, two children – Thomas and Karen, as well as two grandchildren.

In a statement, the Badminton Association of Malaysia described his passing as a significant loss to the nation’s badminton fraternity.

“His contributions and legacy will forever remain an important part of Malaysian badminton history,” the association said.

BAM also extended its condolences on behalf of the council, management, players and staff to Teh’s family and loved ones during this difficult time
