KUCHING: A 67-year-old man was fined RM6,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here today (Aug 17) for threatening to shoot a shop owner with a pistol three years ago.
Saidi Abang Samsudin pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.
According to the charge, he had threatened to kill a 38-year-old woman using a Springfield XDS 9mm pistol at an eatery in Jalan Wan Alwi at about 11.02 am on Dec 22, 2023.
Saidi was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum seven-year jail term, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The court ordered him to serve 12 months in prison if he failed to pay the fine.
According to the facts of the case, the woman was called over to a table by a man she did not know, who then showed her an object believed to be a pistol.
Saidi then threatened her, saying, “I feel like shooting you” (“saya rasa nak tembak jak you”).
Fearing for her safety, the woman lodged a police report.
Saidi was arrested at a one-stop centre in Jalan Wan Abdul Rahman at about 11.30 pm on the same day.
Police also seized a pistol, a firearms and ammunition licence book, a magazine and five rounds of ammunition belonging to him.
Investigations found that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed Saidi threatening the woman while displaying his pistol.
It is understood that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding after Saidi became upset by the sound of firecrackers while having a meal at a traditional food eatery.
The firecrackers were being set off at the victim’s nearby optical shop, where a signboard was being installed ahead of its opening in December 2023.
The noise and smoke from the firecrackers were said to have disturbed Saidi while he was eating.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan, while Saidi was represented by counsel.
