SERIAN: Police have arrested two men, including a foreigner, following an alleged rape report involving a 16-year-old girl at a hostel here.
Serian police chief Supt Freddy Bian Stanislaus Bian said police received a report at around 6.45 pm yesterday (Aug 16) regarding the alleged incident.
“Following investigations, police arrested a 30-something Indonesian man, who is believed to have worked at the same premises as the girl.
“Police also detained a local man in his 20s, who is a close acquaintance of the girl, to assist with investigations.
“Both suspects would be brought to court for a remand application to facilitate further investigations,” he said.
Freddy stated that the case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.
Police will also conduct checks on the Indonesian suspect’s immigration status and movement records, and notify the relevant authorities as necessary.
He pointed out that police take sexual offences seriously, particularly those involving minors.
Members of the public are urged not to circulate any information, photographs or details that could reveal the girl’s identity and compromise her privacy and safety.
