BINTULU: A 52-year-old man was injured after the multi-purpose vehicle he was driving crashed into a road barrier along the Pan Borneo Highway near the Bakun junction in Bintulu early this morning.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, the incident occurred on the stretch of highway linking Bintulu and Samalaju.
Emergency responders from the Kidurong fire station received the distress call at 1.35am and arrived at the scene about 45 minutes later after travelling some 39 kilometres.
The accident involved a Mitsubishi Xpander, which is believed to have skidded before colliding with the road barrier in what firefighters described as a self-inflicted crash.
The victim, identified as Richard Chan Mujah, 52, sustained injuries to his leg.
He had already been pulled from the vehicle by members of the public before the fire and rescue team arrived at the scene.
Firefighters said medical personnel provided initial treatment before the injured man was taken by ambulance to hospital for further care.
A seven-member team from the Kidurong fire station, led by operation commander PBK I Fabian Andy Jesi, was deployed to the location with one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT).
The Fire and Rescue Department said its personnel carried out monitoring and safety assessments around the crash site to ensure the area was secure before concluding operations at 2.31am.
Police and medical personnel were also involved in the operation.
