MIRI: A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to five months in prison and fined RM1,500 by a court here after admitting to stabbing a man who tried to break up an argument with his girlfriend.

The defendant pleaded guilty to a single charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which covers voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means.

He was ordered to serve an additional two weeks in prison should he fail to pay the fine.

The court heard that the incident took place at around 11.20pm on Jun 25 at an unnumbered house in Pujut Corner.

The defendant had been arguing with his girlfriend in the kitchen when the complainant attempted to intervene and calm the situation.

Police said the defendant then became enraged, picked up a knife and stabbed the complainant, injuring his left arm and eyebrow.

He fled the scene once he realised the extent of the injuries he had caused.

He was arrested the following evening, Jun 26, at around 6.30pm by officers from the Miri district police headquarters’ Criminal Investigation Division, along Jalan Pujut Tanjung Batu 4.

Police said he attempted to flee before he was caught.

Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah urged the public to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than resorting to actions that could result in criminal liability, and appealed to residents to pass on any relevant information to the nearest police station.
