KUCHING: A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here after pleading guilty to possessing a small amount of methamphetamine.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali meted out the sentence on Abdul Azim Meringai and ordered the jail term to take effect from Dec 12, 2025.

He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, which carries a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both upon conviction.

Abdul Azim was charged with committing the offence on Nov 26, 2025, at about 1 pm along a side road at Taman Sri Harmoni, off Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa.

According to the facts of the case, a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) of the Padawan police headquarters (IPD) detained the accused during an operation at the location on suspicion of drug abuse.

A search on the accused led to him handing over a transparent straw containing crystalline substances believed to be syabu to one of the officers.

The seized substance was sent to the Chemistry Department Malaysia for analysis on Nov 27, 2025.

The laboratory report confirmed the substance as methamphetamine weighing 0.04g.

As such, the court found that the accused had committed an offence under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly.
