MIRI: Mayfest 2026 is set to drive unity and energise the local economy here, as the month-long celebration returns with a strong focus on community participation and multicultural harmony.
Miri Mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang, said the festival, held in conjunction with the 21st anniversary of Miri attaining city status, goes beyond a symbolic celebration and reflects the city’s rapid growth and long-standing social cohesion since May 20, 2005.
Speaking at the Mayfest 2026 launch at Miri City Hall today (April 30), he described the annual event as a platform that brings together diverse communities through a wide range of cultural and social activities.
“The ‘multicultural’ theme this year reflects the rich diversity of 32 ethnic groups in Miri who continue to live in harmony and mutual respect,” he said.
Yii stressed that the success of Mayfest depends not only on the local authority but also on strong grassroots involvement, urging associations, organisers and the public to actively contribute by hosting community-based programmes throughout May.
The launch ceremony was officiated by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I, who is also Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.
As the festival’s highlight, the Miri City Council will host a five-day programme from May 20 to 24 featuring community activities, street food fairs, cultural performances and awareness campaigns.
The event is expected to generate widespread economic benefits for local communities while reinforcing Miri’s standing as a dynamic, inclusive and competitive city.
