MIRI: The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) here marked World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day yesterday (May 8) with a heartfelt celebration at Miri General Hospital, in line with this year’s theme, ‘On The Side of Humanity’.
The annual event, held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, serves as a reminder of the movement’s steadfast commitment to humanity, especially during times of crisis.

As part of the celebration, members of the World Red Cross Day Committee (WRCDC) visited the maternity ward at Miri General Hospital, where they presented special gifts to new mothers.
Additional recognition was given to the mothers who gave birth on World Red Cross Day, with a total of eight babies, four boys and four girls, born between 12.11 am and 4.31 pm.
The postnatal ward staff also received certificates of appreciation in recognition of their continuous care and dedication.
The event was graced by Dr Mohd Arif Abdullah, chairperson of MRC Miri branch.
In an effort to raise awareness of WRCDC’s ongoing community initiatives, a special radio segment featuring interviews in Malay, Iban, and Mandarin will be aired by RTM Miri later this month.
Several upcoming WRCDC events are also planned to encourage public participation and support, including a flag sale campaign from Jul 7 to 11, an annual parade on Jul 27 at the Miri Municipal Council Field, a blood donation campaign on Aug 10, and a Visit to the Home for the Aged on Sept 13 in Krokop.
