MIRI: A spirit of unity and generosity filled the Miri Senior Citizens Activity Centre (PAWE) here on Monday (March 24) as youths from diverse backgrounds came together for the 2025 Bubur Lambuk Distribution Programme.
Organised by the Miri Intelligent Youth Club, in collaboration with the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Pujut and Krokop sub-branch Youth Wings and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Miri Division), the event aimed to foster social harmony through the traditional dish.
The initiative saw volunteers working tirelessly from as early as 9am to prepare and cook 300 servings of bubur lambuk, a dish synonymous with the spirit of sharing during Ramadan.
Distribution began at 4pm, with priority given to senior citizens and low-income families.
Miri Intelligent Youth Club president Lim Wei Peng noted the deeper significance of the dish, stating: “Bubur lambuk is more than just a traditional meal; it represents the values of sharing and care. Through this initiative, we hope to bring warmth to the community while strengthening ties among different ethnic groups.”
A key highlight of the event was the hands-on experience of preparing bubur lambuk, which not only introduced participants to a cultural tradition but also encouraged cross-cultural collaboration.
Volunteers from the SUPP Pujut and Krokop sub-branch Youth Wings played an active role in the programme, while the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Miri Division) provided crucial support to ensure its success.
The evening concluded with a buka puasa gathering at PAWE, where around 50 attendees from various backgrounds shared a meal featuring both traditional and modern dishes.
The event served as a platform to promote mutual understanding and showcase Sarawak’s multicultural harmony.
Reflecting on the success of the programme, organisers expressed their hope that similar initiatives would continue in the future, encouraging youth participation in community service and reinforcing the values of inclusivity and social support in Miri and beyond.
