BEFORE the first bell rings, many teachers are already at school – reviewing lesson plans, responding to parents’ messages, or preparing materials for the day ahead. When classes end, their work often continues late into the night, filled with marking, mentoring students, organising programmes, or planning for tomorrow. For educators, teaching has never been confined to the classroom alone.
Over the years, teachers accumulate a wealth of experience that goes far beyond delivering lessons. They manage classrooms, design and refine syllabi, mentor students academically and emotionally, organise co-curricular and community events, and serve as examiners for school-based and national-level assessments. Many also take on leadership roles within their schools, guiding colleagues and contributing to institutional development.
Yet, despite the depth and complexity of these responsibilities, such experience is rarely translated into formal academic recognition.
As Malaysia marks Teachers’ Day today (May 16), this is an opportune moment not only to celebrate educators’ dedication, but also to reflect on how their professional skills and experiential learning can be formally validated, particularly through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning for Access (APEL.A).
APEL.A provides a structured pathway for experienced working adults to use their accumulated learning as a ticket to access university. Instead of relying solely on conventional academic qualifications, APEL.A recognises learning gained through real-world professional practice and assesses whether it meets the learning outcomes required for higher education.
For teachers who may have paused their academic journey earlier in life, APEL.A offers a second opportunity, one that honours experience earned through years of service, leadership and professional growth. It affirms that experience acquired through dedication, practice and service does carry academic value.
Different pathways within APEL.A cater to varying academic backgrounds. The T-7 pathway is designed for individuals holding Diploma or STPM qualifications. Candidates who successfully pass the T-7 assessment may use the APEL certificate to apply for admission into a Master’s programme, without first completing a Bachelor’s degree.
Meanwhile, T-8 is intended for those who already hold a Bachelor’s degree. Upon successful assessment, candidates may use the APEL certificate to apply for PhD programmes, providing an alternative route to doctoral studies that recognises professional experience alongside academic readiness.
For teachers who have spent years shaping minds and communities, APEL.A aligns experience with opportunity. As the nation celebrates its educators, recognising their journey through pathways like APEL.A honours not only their service, but also their right to lifelong learning and to advance academically.
