BINTULU needs a motorsports circuit to curb illegal street racing and dangerous riding activities.

Jepak assemblyman, Iskandar Turkee, said recent incidents of illegal racing near the Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge have raised safety concerns, with youths performing dangerous ‘Superman’ stunts and suspected betting activities.

He said the construction of a dedicated circuit would provide a safe and controlled environment for youths to channel their interest in motorsports.

“With such a facility, their talents can be developed positively and safely, while reducing dangerous activities on public roads.

“It can also nurture Sarawakian riders to compete at higher levels, including internationally,” he said in his debate speech on the motion of appreciation to the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s address at the DUN Sitting today.

Iskandar added that a similar initiative in Terengganu had proven effective in curbing illegal racing.

He said the construction of the Terengganu Motorsports Circuit in Gong Badak, Kuala Nerus, helped reduce illegal racing activities by up to 90 per cent.
