PADAWAN: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is making it easier for residents to carry out spring cleaning this festive season by deploying Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) containers at designated locations from Feb 6 to 20.

The two-week initiative coincides with the upcoming Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations, a period when many households traditionally conduct thorough cleaning and dispose of bulky items.

“This initiative is aimed at facilitating spring cleaning activities among residents while helping to maintain a clean and pleasant living environment throughout the festive period,” the council said in a press statement released today.

However, MPP chairman Tan Kai has raised concerns over scavenging activities that affected similar initiatives in previous years.

Scavengers rummaging through the containers often scatter waste around surrounding areas, creating additional clean-up work for the council.

“Residents must dispose of their waste properly to prevent the spread of disease and to maintain the cleanliness and pleasant appearance of the surroundings,” Tan reminded the public.

In a parallel effort to strengthen waste management, MPP is distributing individual waste bins to households across the municipality.

Tan personally handed over bins to residents at Sin San Tu yesterday, describing the move as “a crucial step taken by the council to curb illegal dumping”.

He noted that the individual bin system offers several benefits, including promoting better waste segregation and disposal practices, improving overall hygiene, reducing indiscriminate dumping, and enhancing the cleanliness of residential areas.

The system is also expected to enable more efficient and systematic waste collection, as each household becomes responsible for managing its own refuse.

Once the distribution is completed, the council plans to demolish existing communal bin centres in stages — a move expected to further improve cleanliness and enhance Padawan’s municipal image.

MPP is also calling on residents to act as the council’s “eyes and ears” by reporting illegal dumping and other waste-related offences, helping to keep Padawan clean, safe, and well maintained for all.
