DARO: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is highly regarded by the residents of Daro and Pulau Bruit for his commitment to the people’s welfare and needs.

They said that the Muara Lassa Bridge, inaugurated by Abang Johari on Saturday (Feb 22), not only enhances connectivity between Daro and Pulau Bruit but also boosts economic opportunities in both areas.

Spanning 2.43 kilometres, the RM600 million bridge is Sarawak’s second-longest after the Batang Lupar Bridge.

Here are some comments from people met by the Sarawak Tribune.

Fariah Hanikal

Fariah Hanikal, Headmistress of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Kut Daro:

“Thank you to the Sarawak overnment under the leadership of  Abang Johari for making the dreams of the people in Pulau Bruit and Daro a reality. With this bridge, we no longer have to wait for the ferry to cross. Previously, we had to be at the ferry by 6:30 in the morning to get across. We can now travel at any time without worrying about the ferry.

Dayang Rohayah Awang Yahod

Dayang Rohayah Awang Yahod, Chairperson of the Melanau Matu Daro Association:

We are truly delighted, immensely proud, and extremely happy that this bridge has been completed, making travel from Matu Daro to Sibu and across the entire state of Sarawak much more convenient. Today, all members of the Melanau Matu Daro Association who are present are dressed in Melanau attire because we take great pride in our traditions on this historic occasion.

Jamali Kadir

Jamali Kadir, Headmaster of SK Betanak Daro:

Travel is now much faster, and people in Daro can go to Pulau Bruit and vice versa at any time. The experience of waiting for the ferry for two hours will always be remembered, but now the journey across Muara Lassa takes only four minutes. This is a great improvement that must continue so that rural residents can benefit from the development brought by the government.

Jasani Masani

Jasani Masani, Community Leader:

This bridge will boost the socio-economic growth of the people in Pulau Bruit and Daro. In the past, before the ferry service, we had to travel by water, but when the waves were rough, we couldn’t even reach Daro, and there were many tragedies involving water transport. Now, from Daro to my doorstep, it takes just 23 minutes. Thank you to the Premier and the Sarawak government — let’s see which bridge our Premier will build next.
