KUCHING: The Sarawak Government has begun negotiations to supply electricity to Brunei Darussalam.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the move is part of Sarawak’s wider plan to position itself as the “battery of ASEAN”, with outsiders now recognising the state as a key energy hub for the region.
“Insya-Allah, we will supply electricity to our neighbour, Brunei Darussalam.
“The proposed transmission routes will run from Tudan to Lumut, Seria, and finally to Bandar Seri Begawan,” he said.
He said this when officiating the opening of the Sheikh Othman Sarawak Academic Chair 2025 Conference at the Islamic Complex Hall here today.
Abang Johari added that Sarawak also plans to develop Trusan as a new electricity producer.
“We are already supplying electricity to West Kalimantan, in Pontianak.
“We send electricity there because we have a surplus, and to ensure communities are not left without power,” he added.
He also said that during a recent visit to Jakarta with Prime Minister Daruk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto requested electricity supply to two areas in Indonesia, one of which is Badau.
In addition, Sabah has requested 100 megawatts of electricity, which Sarawak will transmit from Lawas through Sipitang to Kota Kinabalu.
“This way Sabah will also be bright, just like us. When we are able to share, whether in knowledge or in matters like this, we are rewarded (pahala).
“The agreement reflects Sarawak’s unity and strength, with cross-border energy sharing serving as both an economic initiative and a source of blessings (pahala),” he said.
