KUCHING: The new Sarawak Scout headquarters project will be expanded to include a four-storey hostel, youth facilities and a gallery preserving the history of scouting in Sarawak.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government would top up the RM20 million allocation for the project, which will be known as the Tun Openg Building.
He said the additional facilities are intended to provide youths across Sarawak with a space to gather, stay and exchange ideas for the future.

“What I want is to have the ecosystem and social support that we have to give to the young for the future.
“This building is going to be the social support pillar so that the scouting movement, irrespective of our background, can work together,” he said when officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Sarawak Scout headquarters here today (May 30).
Abang Johari, who is also Sarawak Chief Scout, said the proposed hostel would complement the headquarters and serve as a platform for youths to hold discussions, forums and activities beyond scouting.
“Beside the headquarters, since we have another piece of land at the back, we can have accommodation, like a hostel.
“So the young can come here, discuss among themselves, explore the unknown and see how we can change our way of life while maintaining our traditions,” he said.
He said the facility would also help ease accommodation costs for youths travelling to Kuching for programmes and gatherings.
“At least you have your own building and your own space for discussions, to build analytical skills and prepare the young for the future,” he added.
