MIRI: A 24-year-old man was killed and three women injured after a four-wheel-drive vehicle crashed into a tree along Jalan Bintulu-Miri early today.
The crash occurred at about 3am near the hill at Taman Awam Miri, with the driver, identified as Lawrenezo Gelawat Lalung, becoming trapped inside the vehicle.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said its Miri station was alerted to the incident at 3am and arrived at the scene five minutes later.
Firefighters found four people in the vehicle. Three female passengers had managed to get out, while the male driver remained trapped inside.
Rescuers used specialised equipment to free the trapped driver. However, a medical officer at the scene subsequently pronounced him dead.
His body was handed over to police for further action.
The three female passengers sustained injuries of varying severity. One suffered serious injuries, while the other two sustained minor injuries.
They were given initial medical treatment by medical personnel at the scene.
Six firefighters, led by operations commander Abdul Rahman Rosliee, took part in the rescue operation, which was carried out using a Fire Rescue Tender.
Police were also at the scene.
The operation ended at 3.53am.
