LUNDU: Only 0.2 hectares of the Samunsam Forest Reserve fire remain after firefighters extinguished 1.8 hectares of the affected area today (Aug 22).

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighting operations entered their third day today, with ground crews resuming efforts in the morning using fire beaters.

A Bomba helicopter was later deployed for water bombing to assist firefighters in containing the blaze.

“The helicopter arrived at the location at 12.55 pm and carried out 13 water drops involving a total of 18,200 litres of water.

“The operation successfully brought the spread of the fire under control before the water-bombing operation ended at 2.47 pm,” a Bomba spokesperson said.

Water used for the operation was sourced from the Belinsah river mouth.

Ground crews continued firefighting efforts after the helicopter departed before operations were suspended at 4.30pm.
