LUNDU: Rural communities were given a closer look at consumer awareness and protection efforts through the Kenyalang Consumer Ride and Outreach programme here.

Sarawak Federal Secretary Datuk Ahmad Nadzri Mohd Hassan said the programme provided an avenue for the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to engage directly with the community through consumer advocacy.

He said the initiative enabled KPDN to directly share information on consumer rights, ethical purchasing, trade fraud awareness, price controls and the ministry’s functions and role.

Among the activities conducted were enforcement advocacy and accuracy testing training on dispenser pumps at Petronas and Shell petrol stations here.

“The testing, conducted using a 10-litre standard tank, was carried out to assess the accuracy of each petrol station dispenser pump according to the litre measurement displayed,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Aug 22).

He added that KPDN Sarawak also organised the Rahmah Madani Sale programme themed around Hari Kebangsaan dan Hari Malaysia (HKHM) 2026.

He said visitors could purchase various essential goods while enjoying discounts of up to 30 per cent.

“This demonstrates KPDN Sarawak’s concern in ensuring that rural communities can purchase essential goods at reasonable prices,” he said.

Ahmad Nadzri said the Kenyalang Consumer Ride and Outreach programme would also carry out a community service activity involving a clean-up around Pandan Beach in Kampung Siar in collaboration with the Lundu District Office.

“I urge the public to join us in maintaining the cleanliness of our homes and surrounding areas,” he said.

He said the Merdeka month was a special occasion to strengthen the spirit of patriotism, foster love for the country and appreciate the services and sacrifices of past heroes.

“The celebration also serves as a platform to strengthen the spirit of unity, togetherness and responsibility among members of the workforce,” he said.

The programme was jointly organised by KPDN Sarawak, the Office of the Federal Secretary of Sarawak, Lundu District Office and Lundu District Police Headquarters in conjunction with the upcoming HKHM 2026 celebrations at the Lundu Waterfront.
