KUCHING: Proactive measures to strengthen rabies control are being intensified with the implementation of a pilot Oral Rabies Vaccine (ORV) programme in Taman Malihah, following concerns over public health safety.
The programme, organised by the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), aims to increase vaccination rates among stray dogs using vaccine bait, thereby curbing the spread of rabies.
Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said the programme is a key initiative in efforts to contain rabies transmission in Sarawak.
“The implementation involves about 20 teams deployed across 20 locations to expand vaccination coverage, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
“The vaccine is administered orally to dogs, especially free-roaming ones, using specially designed and safe bait. When the bait is bitten, the vaccine inside is released into the animal,” he said when inspecting the programme and visiting the family of a rabies victim here Tuesday.
Fazzrudin, who is also Chief Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, encouraged pet owners, especially dog owners, to have their animals vaccinated at the Sarawak Veterinary Services Department (DVS Sarawak) to ensure continued protection.
“Hopefully, these ongoing efforts will help reduce the spread of rabies and ensure the safety and well-being of the community,” he said.
