KUCHING: Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PIDM) has added 20 more names to the 270 students it has supported since 2010 through its Undergraduate Scholarship Programme.
The programme provides financial aid for tuition fees, living expenses and learning aids, while also offering mentoring, coaching and internship opportunities with PIDM.
This programme is also designed to help students from families facing financial challenges to complete their tertiary education and prepare for future careers.
Commenting on this, PIDM chief executive officer Rafiz Azuan Abdullah said the scholarships recognise both the perseverance and potential of recipients.
“Behind every scholarship recipient is a story of perseverance and potential. We know that the cost of higher education can be challenging for many families.
“The PIDM Undergraduate Scholarship Programme aims to support these deserving students so they can focus on their growth and are provided with opportunities to create a positive, lasting impact for their families and communities,” he said.
He added that investing in the younger generation is vital to building a stronger and more resilient nation.
“As an organisation that protects financial consumers, we view that education as an important safety net for the future.”
This year’s recipients include Adeline Liew Pei Fen, 20, from Kuching, who excelled in the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM).
Inspired by her cousin who became the first in their family to obtain a degree, Adeline hopes to become an economist.
“I’m glad that I applied and I am more motivated than ever to do my best in my university studies,” she said.
Visnu, 21, from Kluang, Johor, will pursue Social Sciences (Economics) at Universiti Sains Malaysia. He said the award eases the burden of financing his education.
“This scholarship lifts a big weight off my shoulders. It means I can focus on excelling in my studies instead of worrying about how my family and I can afford it,” he said.
Another scholar, Mohamad Riyaz bin Mubarak Ahamed, 19, from Seri Kembangan, Selangor, has begun a degree in Applied Finance at Universiti Putra Malaysia after completing matriculation.
“I was so grateful to be selected. I look forward to getting exposure to real-world experiences that will help my future career,” he said.
Since its establishment, the programme has supported students across a wide range of disciplines, including accounting, economics, actuarial science, computer science and information technology.
