MIRI: Police issued 18 summonses and seized two motorcycles during an overnight crackdown on illegal motorcycle activities in Miri city centre following mounting public complaints over noise pollution and reckless riding.
The operation, carried out by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri district police headquarters (IPD Miri), began at 10pm on Friday and continued until 4.30am on Saturday.
Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation focused on several hotspots in the city following reports of motorcyclists disrupting traffic flow and public order.
A total of 12 locals, comprising 10 men and two women, together with 10 motorcycles, were inspected during the operation.
Officers detected a range of traffic and vehicle modification offences, including the use of illegal “fancy” registration plates, riding without valid driving licences, motorcycles without registration numbers, excessively noisy modified exhaust systems, unlawful structural modifications and the absence of side mirrors.
“Eight motorcycles were issued with PDRM (K) 257 notices for various modification offences, while two motorcycles were seized under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further investigation and action,” he said in a statement today.
ACP Mohd Farhan said police would continue to take firm action against individuals involved in illegal street racing and other irresponsible activities that could endanger both riders and the public.
He reminded road users to comply with traffic regulations and avoid modifying vehicles beyond approved specifications.
Members of the public with information on illegal street racing or disruptive motorcycle activities are urged to contact IPD Miri to assist ongoing enforcement efforts.
