At 27, Chef Robbie Richard Balcarek, owner of Little Fairy Cafe, is not waiting for age or experience to tell him where he belongs.

The Bidayuh chef and entrepreneur from Bau is carving out that space himself — through his cooking, where Indigenous flavours, culture and ambition meet.

That journey has now seen the home-grown venture he built from the ground up earn a place among the 25 eateries recognised at the TOP25 Restaurants Sarawak Awards 2026, with Little Fairy Cafe named one of five winners in the Top Indigenous Restaurants category.

Presented during the Soul of Borneo Gala Evening in conjunction with PATA Travel Mart 2026, the awards recognised restaurants across five categories reflecting the breadth of Sarawak’s food and hospitality scene.

Little Fairy Cafe shared the Indigenous category with Borneo Cultures Museum Restaurant, Lepau Restaurant, Budaya Restaurant and The Lamin.

The recognition was presented by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, placing Robbie’s restaurant among a select group of eateries recognised on Sarawak’s culinary stage.

But for Robbie, the significance of the recognition is not measured by the award itself. It is measured by what it represents.

“Receiving this recognition as a young chef means a lot to me. This is not only about Little Fairy Cafe, but also about representing where I come from and showing that our Indigenous identity can be part of the wider culinary industry,” he said.

At Little Fairy Cafe, Robbie has built his work around Sarawakian and Indigenous flavours, bringing them into a contemporary dining setting without stripping away the cultural identity behind them.

The official TOP25 profile describes the cafe as celebrating Borneo through food and community, with its menu highlighting local ingredients and Indigenous influences, particularly from the Bidayuh community.

For Robbie, traditional food does not have to remain confined to the past. It can evolve, be presented professionally and find a place on modern dining tables — while still telling the story of where it came from.

And that story is deeply personal.

As a chef-entrepreneur, Robbie understands the importance of representation, particularly for Indigenous youths who may not always see people from their communities occupying spaces they aspire to enter.

“I want young Indigenous people to know that our background is not a limitation. We can build businesses, become chefs, compete internationally and create something meaningful while still being proud of who we are,” he said.

But his message is not simply about becoming a chef. It is about having the courage to start.

At an age when many young people are still figuring out which direction to take, Robbie believes there is little value in waiting for the “right” time to pursue a dream.

“You don’t have to wait until you are older to start. Start with what you have, learn along the way and don’t be afraid to fail. Age should never be a limitation when it comes to pursuing what you love,” he said.

The TOP25 recognition, therefore, is more than another accolade for Robbie.

It is an opportunity to keep bringing Sarawak’s Indigenous flavours into wider conversations while showing younger generations that their heritage can travel with them wherever they choose to go.

“If my journey can inspire even one young person from our community to believe that they can achieve something bigger, then it is worth it,” he said.

From Bau to Sarawak’s culinary stage, Robbie’s journey is not simply about how far a chef can go.

It is about what he chooses to carry with him along the way — his culture, his identity and the belief that there is no need to wait to pursue what you love.
