MIRI: The relaunch of Selesa Pacific Hospital here marks Sarawak’s continued commitment to strengthening its healthcare system through collaboration between the public and private sectors over the past three decades.
Deputy Premier and Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, said the relaunch symbolised more than just a change in branding; it represented the enduring dedication of Sarawak’s healthcare professionals in supporting the state’s development agenda.
“This is a renewal of Selesa Hospital which began 30 years ago. Today, 30 years later, we are here again – and this comes at a very timely stage in Sarawak’s growth,” he said during the hospital’s relaunch ceremony today.
Dr Sim said since its establishment, the hospital has recorded more than 11,000 births, contributing significantly to the provision of quality healthcare services for the local community.
He stressed that Sarawak’s healthcare system has grown stronger through the close cooperation between the public and private sectors, which continues to form the foundation of its resilience despite challenges such as limited resources and manpower.
“Based on national standards, Sarawak still faces a shortage of 45 per cent in hospital beds and 54 per cent in doctors.
“This is not because Sarawak is not trying, but because the system still needs stronger attention and support from the federal government,” he said.
Dr Sim called on the federal government to increase healthcare allocations in line with the Health White Paper, to ensure Sarawak’s healthcare development progresses in tandem with the nation’s overall growth.
He also commended the unwavering dedication of Sarawak’s healthcare personnel, who continue to perform excellently despite resource constraints.
Among those present were Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin; Deputy Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew; and other distinguished guests.
