KUCHING: Sarawak’s overall electricity supply remains reliable and sufficient despite prolonged dry weather, Sarawak Energy said, citing its planning and operational measures for hydropower plants.

Reduced rainfall in the catchments since April 2025 has lowered inflows into the reservoirs at the Bakun, Murum and Batang Ai hydropower plants (HEPs), but the state’s diversified and integrated power system allows the utility to adjust its generation mix as needed.

“Hydropower typically accounts for around 65 per cent of electricity supplied to the grid, with thermal generation making up roughly 34 per cent and other sources the remaining one per cent,” Sarawak Energy said in a statement.

During prolonged dry periods, hydropower output may be reduced to conserve reservoir levels while thermal generation is increased to maintain supply, with the balance adjusted once reservoir conditions improve.

Sarawak Energy said it continues to closely monitor hydrological and reservoir conditions at all three HEPs, working with the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the National Disaster Management Agency, the Malaysian Meteorological Department and the Rural Water Supply Department to coordinate the response.

Two cloud-seeding operations were carried out by the state government in May and June under SDMC’s coordination to encourage rainfall over major dam and water catchment areas, with a third series scheduled from Sept 3 to 5.

Customers are encouraged to use electricity prudently, particularly air-conditioning and other cooling appliances, by turning off unused appliances and spacing out the use of high-powered devices rather than running them together, the statement added.

Customers with smart meters can also refer to the SEB cares mobile app or web portal, where the Energy Insights feature breaks down consumption by hour, day and month.

Sarawak Energy said it remains committed, together with the state government and relevant agencies, to maintaining reliable electricity supply while continuing efforts to conserve reservoir levels during the dry period.
