SIBU: A total of 12 Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs) and community organisations in the Bawang Assan constituency were presented with Minor Rural Project (MRP) Special Grants amounting to RM400,000 today (Apr 30).

The grants were given out by Bawang Assan assemblyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, at his service centre here.

The recipients include JKKK Bukit Lan, JKKK Ria Bawang Assan, JKKK Pradom/Sg. Maaw/Tung Nan Poh, JKKK Sebarang Ensurai/Kungit/Tg Pan, JKKK Sg. Empawah, JKKK Sg. Bidut/Telok Bango/Bukit Igu, JKKK Sg. Maaw, JKKK Telok Bango, JKKK Ensurai and JKKK Maling Engilo.

Other community organisations that also benefited were Rukun Tetangga (KRT) Sg. Empawah and Persatuan Penduduk Engilo Sg. Bidut.

According to Wong, these grants were intended to support community service programmes and grassroots development projects, benefiting residents under their respective jurisdictions.

He also announced that similar MRP Special Grants will soon be extended to all 106 longhouses across the Bawang Assan constituency, including villages in Lower Batang Igan such as Kpg Besar and Kpg Kecil.

Bawang Assan, he added, is a vast and diverse constituency, encompassing parts of Sibu town, rural Chinese settlements along the Rajang River and Igan River, as well as numerous longhouses stretching to the Igan and Matu-Daro areas.

“This geographical spread presents significant challenges in ensuring fair and balanced distribution of MRP funds. In Sibu town alone, more than 200 organisations apply for financial assistance each year.

“While resources are limited, I will remain committed to doing my utmost to assist as many communities as possible, ensuring that development reaches all corners of the constituency,” added Wong, who is also the Senior Vice-President of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).
