KUCHING: More than 1kg of suspected syabu worth over RM51,000 has landed two local men in serious trouble, with both now facing charges that carry the death penalty or life imprisonment.

The suspects, aged 38 and 51, were picked up by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) during an operation in Kampung Bintawa Ulu yesterday (July 6).

Also seized from them were 1,027.95g of suspected syabu with an estimated street value of RM51,397, and RM3,303 in cash believed to be proceeds from drug distribution activities.

Police display cash believed to be proceeds from drug trafficking activities seized during the operation.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said initial urine screening found the 38-year-old suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, while the 51-year-old tested negative.

Background checks on both suspects found that they had no prior criminal records.

“The pair have been remanded for seven days until July 14 to facilitate further investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“Upon conviction, the offence carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and up to 12 strokes of the cane,” he said.

He added that the successful operation was the result of continuous intelligence gathering and cooperation from members of the public.

He stated that police would not compromise with anyone involved in the drug trade, as possessing, trafficking or facilitating drug-related activities are serious offences under the law.

Members of the public with information on drug-related activities are urged to contact Bukit Aman NCID hotline at 012-2087222 or Sarawak NCID hotline at 017-5929211.
