KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak’s traditional cuisine has the potential to become a powerful platform for showcasing the state’s rich culture and identity to a wider audience, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Speaking at the official opening of Ruai House of Sarawak here on Monday (Aug 3), Uggah said the restaurant demonstrates how food can serve as a bridge to introduce Sarawak’s unique heritage to locals, tourists and future generations.
He added that the restaurant offers more than authentic Sarawak dishes, as it also tells the story of the state’s cultural heritage through the gastronomic experience it provides.
“Situated opposite Dataran Merdeka, an area rich in history, you are now part of that history.
“If Ruai can create its own legacy from now into the future, I believe all Sarawakians will remember the role you have played in bringing Sarawak and Dayak culture to Kuala Lumpur,” he was quoted as saying by TVS.
Uggah said the establishment of Ruai House of Sarawak is also expected to attract Sarawakians living in Kuala Lumpur, as well as local and international visitors, to experience the state’s culture and culinary heritage.
He noted that the restaurant’s concept, inspired by the ruai — the communal gallery of a traditional Sarawak longhouse — complements its mission of using food as a medium to connect people while sharing stories about Sarawak.
“There are about 30,000 Sarawakians living in Kuala Lumpur. This represents a tremendous business opportunity for you.
“I believe that through the networks and collaborations you build, more tourists will be drawn to visit.”
Ruai House of Sarawak officially opened during the recent Sarawak Day celebrations and has since emerged as one of the capital city’s destinations showcasing authentic Sarawak cuisine and culinary heritage.
Also present at the ceremony were Dewan Negara President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
