SEMATAN: Sarawak athletes are entering the final phase of preparations for Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 in Selangor as training programmes intensify.

Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, reminded athletes to remain focused and make full use of the remaining preparation period ahead of the Games.

“This is the time to improve weaknesses, strengthen mental and physical preparation, and double efforts and commitment towards achieving success.

“Every remaining day is valuable and must be fully utilised,” he said during the closing ceremony of the Champion Camp and launch of the countdown to SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026 at Kem Putra Sentosa Retreat here on Wednesday night (May 6).

Abdul Karim said Sarawak are aiming to defend the overall champions title after topping the medal standings at the 2024 SUKMA edition.

He added that several preparation phases have been arranged, including athlete shortlisting, decentralised training and centralised training ahead of the Games.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, said the Champion Camp programme was aimed at strengthening mental resilience, discipline and teamwork among athletes.

“Champion Camp is not just an ordinary training programme, but a platform to produce athletes who are not only excellent in sports performance, but also have integrity and discipline.

“The programme also helps athletes develop fighting spirit, endurance and teamwork to ensure they are ready to face challenges at SUKMA.

“The 100-day remaining period is a critical phase and final push for the Sarawak contingent to sharpen strategies, improve performances, and intensify efforts towards achieving the best possible results,” he said.

The Champion Camp programme involved 581 athletes across two phases featuring multiple sports, including rugby, athletics, cricket, badminton, boxing, wushu and Muaythai.
